Cannot exclude extension, error

Postby AmmoResearch » Mon Jul 01, 2013 11:50 am

I am having a problem with FEBE 7.3.0.1 where I have an extension that FEBE says it cannot find. I added it to the ignore list (it was checked by FEBE already), however it still runs the backup looking for it.

There re several extensions that FEBE says it cannot handle, however this is the only one that it seems to have this problem with.

The extension in question appears to be a proprietary add-on from Nuance. I tried to find a place from which I could download and install it, but it appears to be only available as part of complete package. Without looking at the extension's code, I cannot tell why it is failing to be backed up. One thing I did notice is that in the FEBE ignore list, this add-on appears in green. Green is for themes and blue is for extensions. So for whatever else this extension is doing, it is identifying itself (at least to FEBE) incorrectly.

Until/unless I can get more information, I've put this add-on on the Extensions that do not work with FEBE list.

You are correct as to how it is presenting, however this seems to be a new problem, as this product has been installed for over a year with no previous problems from FEBE. The extension is working correctly within Firefox. I do not recall whether it was previously being ignored, but I can definitely say that checking "ignore" should definitely "ignore" whatever it is. The issue is not with the extension or how it is representing to FEBE...rather I think it should be viewed as what is FEBE interpreting it as, as Firefox sees it correctly as an extension. Regardless, FEBE is trying to work with it despite being told not to. There are several extensions that FEBE has to ignore in order to work, and the documentation states this clearly, however this presupposes that the ignore function is working correctly.

You are, of course, correct and I need to fix it. Can you provide me with the actual extension .xpi and its location on your computer? If you change the extension's name from .xpi to .zip, you can include it as an attachment within this forum.

XPI

Postby AmmoResearch » Tue Jul 02, 2013 12:31 pm

Attached please find what I believe to be the xpi in question, though I must admit that I found it by looking directly in the Dragon directory, and not by following the paths generated by Firefox and FEBE. I should also point out that there were several extensions that FEBE was having the same problem in handling, though this is the only one that I cannot seem to get the exclusion to take on.

Here is the output for the extension in question from the FEBE AddonManager Functionality check...note that ignore is set to false

plugin

Postby AmmoResearch » Tue Jul 02, 2013 12:36 pm

I have also found a listing for a plugin (separate from extension), as well. See below.

The plot thickens ...

I installed the extension you provided and FEBE seems to recognize it just fine

It is displayed in the ignore list as an extension:
Image
and remembers when it is checked.

I ran a backup and it ignored it as it should have:
Image

I then unchecked it in the ignore list and ran another backup:
Image

The only inconsistency I found was in the Check AddonManager Functionality report:
Image
where "ignore" is set to "false" instead of "true". I'll have to check into that.

The only other difference is that I'm currently running a slightly modified version of FEBE (v7.3.0.2beta) that has a fix for global installation. It can be found as an attachment in another post. I would suggest you try that first. (Note: Rename the download from .zip to .xpi and open it with File > Open File... > (Browse for the file). Ignore the instructions given in that post for the installation location. Those instructions are for installing FEBE globally.)

Please let me know how it works.

Plot thickens, indeed

Chuck

I am getting the exact same result as before. That is to say the error where it does not find the proposed extension, and then the report that indicates the error.

Besides gpoing to the ignore list and selecting 'get list', is there someplace that will show definitively what is currently set to ignore?

Would you have any interest in a remote session to this machine to see what I see?

That said, I notice something different in your screenshots. Note the versions shown in your ignore list vs. mine. Yours is showing 1008 while mine is showing 1096. I think the plugin may be the key here. I am attaching the dll for your reference, and the path installed for me is C:\Program Files (x86)\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking12\Program.

See the plugin vs. the extension...same name though (genius right?)

The question is, why is FEBE only seeing one of them, and regardless, not honoring the ignore?

I tried installing the dll to C:\Program Files (x86)\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking12\Program but, not surprisingly, Fx did not recognize it as a plugin. I would probably have to install the entire Dragon program and I'm hesitant to do that (I'm not really sure what it does).

I did notice that FEBE did correctly ignore the (v1.0.0.96) version, but the description includes the word "Plugin". Nuance provides the description (FEBE gets it from the .xpi's install.rdf file) so Nuance may be confused about what the difference is between a plugin and an extension. In the version I installed, the install.rdf has the name "Dragon NaturallySpeaking Rich Internet Application Support" with no "Plugin" mentioned. Perhaps what I have installed is not the same as what FEBE is looking at on your machine.

As an experiment, temporarily disable the plugin (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins > (click disable)) and see if the backup works.

Seeing that this error is recent, I thought I would note that I'm having the same issue (all the same symptoms, etc). I noted it a few days after Dragon Naturally Speaking was installed and it has been happening ever since (2+ months or more). I have the full pro version too, suggesting that it will probably occur with all of their voice recognition products.

One thought is that maybe the other user with the issue may have installed some upgrade/patch to Dragon in the last week or two??

I just re-ran the backup with BOTH the plugin and the extension disabled, and still get the error, so definitely FEBE choking, probably on the plugin somehow.

Try manually adding the plugin into FEBE's ignore list. The file that contains the ignore list is located in [profile]/febeIgnoreListData.json. Using FEBE > Options > Advanced > Check AddonManager functionality, determine what the guid and name of the plugin is.

Open the ignore list with any plaintext editor (like Wordpad or Notepad). Copy/paste one of the lines to create a new line. Edit the information in the new line by replacing the 'id' and 'name' fields of the plugin, being careful not to change the formatting or adding any extra spaces outside of the quotes.

This ignore list data looks something like this:
Code: Select all
{"id":"{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}","name":"Default{23.0}  (global)"}
{"id":"jid0-lmZNVK7a82O8cufhdfB9dUDfA2w@jetpack","name":"Dragon NaturallySpeaking Rich Internet Application Support{1.0.0.8}  "}

The guid of the Dragon add-on and plugin should be different and both should be included in the ignore list.

Save the edits and see if the backup works.

Progress

Postby AmmoResearch » Sun Jul 21, 2013 8:32 pm

OK, so that definitely worked. One of the definitions was already in there, I added the last line. So it would seem that FEBE is having trouble with the exclusion list and adding it?
I tested with both enabled and disabled.
