For some reason, *nix users can't play sound with FEBE (it's been a long time issue). Try unchecking FEBE Options > How to backup > Play sounds. That should fix it.

Win 7 Home Premium SP-1 64 bit FireFox 28.0 FEBE 8.0Beta12.1

Using FEBE on exit to backup bookmarks{default}.html, bookmarks{default}.json, and prefs{default}.js into a time stamped folder in my DropBox folder. I keep two backup folders.

FEBE results shows the backup completing properly and the folder in DropBox is as expected with three files.

However I notice that the bookmarks{default}.htm file sometimes disappears from the FEBE backup folder. This happened to last nights "on exit" backup which contained all three files after I just did a "backup now".

I will install 8Beta13.0 and report back if this is still a problem

Now using 8Beta13.0, including FEBE "Results Report" and having more problems

A. "Update Now" produces the following in: FEBE 2014 04-01 11.35.29
1. Bookmarks (html) backed up to: bookmarks{default}.html
2. Bookmarks (json) backed up to: bookmarks{default}.json
3. Preferences backed up to: prefs{default}.js

B. "Update on EXIT" produces the following in: FEBE 2014 04-01 11.40.41
1. Bookmarks (html) backed up to: bookmarks{default}.html
2. Bookmarks (json) backed up to: bookmarks{default}.json
3. Preferences backed up to: prefs{default}.js
However, after a short time bookmarks{default}.html disappears. :!: :?:

Is all you are backing up is the bookmarks and preferences?

The only reason I can think of that would cause one of the bookmarks backup to disappear is because Fx is closing and thus aborting the queued backup items. What to you have set as the Backup on shutdown grace period (seconds)? I have mine set to 10 seconds and a trial run with only bookmarks and preferences set for backup worked as expected (no deleted files).

bookmarks{default}.html
bookmarks{default}.json
prefs{default}.js
Results - FEBE 2014 04-01 21.25.51.html

I had to go up to 16 seconds delay to retain all backups. html was written before json.

Perhaps a future mod could be to have an option for an automatic delay until backups are complete.

For reliable backup at EXIT now at 18 seconds delay

Be sure to give yourself (and Fx) a little wiggle room. While 18 seconds may be enough enough today, it may not be tomorrow. Bookmarks, cookies, history and certain other files are backed up asynchronously and there is currently no reliable way to determined when these backups are finished. The only way to mitigate this is to have a sufficient grace period defined. Future versions of Fx are scheduled to include better monitoring of asynchronous routines (i.e., 'promises').

FEBE uses synchronous routines during a backup on exit whenever possible to avoid interrupted backups (for example, extensions and themes are always backed up synchronously during a backup on shutdown). Unfortunately, all items in the places database (bookmarks, etc.) can only be backed up using the existing Firefox APIs which are asynchronous.

Bottom line is this: Don't depend on a FEBE backup on exit when backing up bookmarks, cookies, history, usernames and passwords if those backups are critical. A manually run, scheduled, or backup on startup would be more reliable in those cases.

Fx 29.0b5
Febe 8 (unknown beta version)

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... /versions/
I installed Febe 8 from addon.mozilla but it doesn't state which version it is and assumes as a final version. Checking Chuck's homepage shows that Febe 8 is still in beta v13 so I am not sure if it's up to the latest version of beta or is a final version.

Image provided below shows that it skips Fx 29 theme for some reason... not sure if that would be the case with 7.3.0.1 but I haven't tested that yet. Been using 7.3.0.1 with Fx 28 and was fine. Was reluctant to upgrade from 7 but once I did, the options etc. were more or less literally the same so that was a relief.

I submitted FEBE v8.0 (final) to AMO a few days ago and it is awaiting full review. I'm surprised AMO even makes it available for download before the review is complete, but you have to dig for it. It is the same as beta13 with the addition of all currently available locales (translations).

FEBE has always ignored the default theme as it is part of the Fx core.

Hi, Chuck. v8.0.1 gets stuck when backing up. v8.0 works fine.

Code: Select all
User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; Win64; x64; rv:30.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/30.0

The backup seems to be fine though, the screen just stays open.

...and adding FEBE in the menu fixes the hang. So this is indeed an issue with v8.0.1. BTW, do you have the source on GitHub or something similar?

Please see this post.

The source code is available by simply unzipping the .xpi file (this works with all Fx extensions). You can also get the zipped version from the "Download" link on the FEBE homepage.
