FEBE 5 Tutorial: How to Create a User-Defined Backup

In this tutorial, we will back up our Thunderbird profile using FEBE 5.0 in Firefox 2.0.0.4.
  1. First, open FEBE Options and go to the Options tab.
  2. Under Backup type, check Selective.
  3. Under Backup Items, check the box that says User-defined backups.

NOTE: If you repeatedly get errors on a particular item, uncheck it from the list. You might also have to uncheck Verify Backups in some cases.
  4. Now go to the bottom right of that window and click the button that says User-defined backups. A window will pop up.

  5. Click New.

  6. Under Type, click Folder.
  7. For Label, enter a short description of the backup. In this case, I have called it TB15-Mail.
  8. For Description, enter a more detailed description. I have entered Thunderbird 1.5 Mail Profile.
  9. For Source, type in the exact file path or click the Browse button and browse to the folder that contains your Thunderbird Mail profile.
  10. Check the box at the bottom that says Include in backup.

  11. Click Submit, and a window will pop up.

  12. Click Close.

  13. Then click Post entries and exit, and another window will pop up.

  14. Click Close.
  15. Then click OK to close the FEBE Options window.
  16. Restart Firefox.
  17. You are now ready to perform the backup, but first let's check to verify that our custom backup definition is in there. Follow the steps above to get to the User-defined backups window. This time, click Edit instead of New.

  18. You will see a drop-down list at the top left of the window. Click it, and you will see the backup definition you previously made. At this point you can make changes if needed.

  19. Now let's perform our FEBE backup the usual way. Your Thunderbird Mail profile will be backed up in the same folder as your other backup items. If you have a large profile (lots of stored mail messages), this could take a while. Please be patient.
  20. When the FEBE Results page displays, scroll all the way to the bottom. That is where the User-defined items will be found.
