I want to get my business on the Internet.  What do I need and what will it cost?

1) Do you have a computer?  You will need a Personal Computer (PC) or Macintosh with the appropriate hardware and software for dealing with the Internet.  The software includes a browser (like Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer) to view webpages, and an email program (like Eudora or Outlook Express) to send and receive electronic mail.
COST: Computer – around $1000. Software: Free

2) Do you have Internet access?  You will need an Internet Service Provider (ISP) like American Online (AOL), Qwest, or Microsoft Network (MSN).  An ISP is a company that provides you with the Internet connection.  This can be a dial-up or a much faster direct connection (DSL) or Cable Modem.
Cost: Dial-up – about $20.00/month.  DSL/Cable – $35.00 to $50.00/month.

3) Do you have a Domain Name?  This is the Internet address people type in to get to your website (like www.CustomSoftwareConsult.com).  Do you have a name in mind?  Click here to see if it is available.
Cost: $35.00/year or less

4) Are you going to sell your product on the Internet?  If so, you will need a merchant account to be able to accept credit cards over the Internet.
Cost: Varies, but usually you pay a small transaction fee (like 15 or 20 cents) plus a percentage of the total sale (typically around 2.5%) for each sale.  Depending on the merchant, there may also be a monthly minimum.

5) Now you need a website.  This is where Custom Software Consulting comes in.  We will design your site from the ground up.  We work closely with you to design the perfect site with that certain look and feel of your business.  This will require a lot of input from you.  First we design a rough template and then gradually hone it into the final product.  This is not an instant process.  Pictures have to be taken, logos designed, and text written.
Cost: $250.00 and up

6) Finally, you need a place to put your site on the Internet.  This is called a “web hosting service”.  Your actual website will reside on the hosting service’s computer (called a “server”).  You are, in effect, renting this space from them.
Cost: About $10.00/month for a very basic service to around $50.00/month for a complete secure server with e-commerce capability.
