OPIE EXPORT DIRECTORY confusion

Postby Phoebe » Sat Jul 03, 2010 9:22 am

I am very confused by OPIE. It seems to me that OPIE should let users specify two directories: source and destination locations. Inasmuch as I cannot get it to show me anything when I click "get list," I am forced to guess what location is its source location. That is inconsistent with FEBE'S option of choosing where to store backups, but knowing where to find the source directory. It seems to me that users should have some checkboxes to select the source location (or browse to select, but that is good only for the most sophisticated users):
1) Firefox default location for extensions;
2) Mr. Tech Toolkit location specified for extension installation;
3) Mr. Tech Toolkit location specified for extension archives;
4)

And, separately from selecting the source location, users should be able to select a place to store their backups.

When you click OPIE > Configure > Get extension info, OPIE creates a list of all extensions it finds in your profile/extensions folder. It then parses your prefs.js file to see if it can glean any preference entries that belong to the extensions. OPIE uses the concept of "preference root" to determine if a particular preference belongs to a specific extension. For instance, all FEBE preference names start with "extensions.febe." (i.e., "extensions.febe.extBUdir", "extensions.febe.buType", etc.).

If OPIE can determine what the preference root is, it will list it along with the extension version number and GUID in the configure window (click "Expand all"). If OPIE cannot determine the preference root (the display says "Unknown"), but you know what it is you can enter it by double-clicking on the entry.

OPIE > Export > Get list retrieves the list of extensions which have preferences OPIE knows about and can be exported. After ticking the extensions you want to process and clicking the "Export" button, the preference backups are created in the directory that is specified under OPIE > Export > Export directory.
