FEBE Backups won't run since upgrading to FF3.6.6

Neither scheduled or manual backups will run. Nothing happens, no status, no results. Error generated:

Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80520015 (NS_ERROR_FILE_ACCESS_DENIED) [nsILocalFile.remove]" nsresult: "0x80520015 (NS_ERROR_FILE_ACCESS_DENIED)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://febe/content/febe.js :: febeDelISO8601Dirs :: line 385" data: no]

Try running Tools > FEBE > FEBE Options > Misc (Debug) >Verify extension directory. If you get a message box that says:

Code: Select all
Verify complete with errors ... see log.
Do you want FEBE to attempt repairs?  (OK for yes, Cancel for no)

Click OK and try the backup again.

Yeah, tried that. No errors and still won't run. :(

What do you have set for your Tools > FEBE > FEBE options > Directory > Backup destination directory? The error indicates that FEBE is attempting to remove the old timestamped folders in that directory and can't. You can verify this by increasing the value you have set for Tools > FEBE > FEBE options > Directory > Maximum backup directories to keep.

That worked, but I don't understand what changed, perhaps a Windows update? I noticed the problem after upgrading Firefox to 3.6.6, but a bunch of Windows updates came out in the some time frame. I've always limited my backup folders to 7 days--for years! And now it doesn't work?

It would appear that there is something in at least one of your older backups that is either flagged as read-only or corrupt (or both). Do you get any messages/errors/system administrator prompts when you attempt to manually delete the directories with Windows Explorer?

Yes, I now get a UAC prompt to delete a directory on that drive which never happened before. I'm thinking that this is MS meddling--uh, I mean helping--and adding a new "feature" to Win7. I never used to get prompted before deleting directories. I'm thinking that the fix to this is somehow granting FEBE the ability to "Run as Administrator"? Of course, there is always turning off UAC altogether, but I'd rather not do that if it is possible to find a workaround that respects the setting generally, but allows FEBE to do what it needs to do.

I would definitely agree that granting FEBE administrator privileges is not the way to go. First of all you can't give just FEBE those rights - it would have to be the firefox.exe file itself and thus every extension you have installed would have those privileges. And that's just asking for trouble.

If you navigate to the backup destination directory, open it, select all and press delete, which file(s) does it balk at? Maybe it's just one particular backup item that is causing the problem. If we can figure out which it is, maybe there is a work-around.

Awesome!! You nailed it! Everything on my USB drive was acting the same way. So I went to investigate the Security settings for the drive. Somehow, my Windows ID was no longer being recognized, I suspect because of a Windows Update that I applied while disconnected from my USB drive. Once I added myself back, everything worked great. Problem solved.

Thanks SO much for you patience and assistance in helping me resolve this! :lol:
